HMM: New Record Container Load Bound For Europe

New 24,000 TEU Mega-Max Container Ship Loads New TEU Record, Heads West to Suez.

10 May, Yantian CH — The HMM ALGECIRAS departed for Europe via Suez carrying 19,621 TEUs, the largest container shipment ever loaded. The load is 47 more than the 19,574 TEUs loaded on the MSC GULSEN in August.2019 {Korea Herald, 10.May.2020}.

ALGCIRAS launched its maiden voyage from Qingdao CH on 23 April, deployed into THE Alliance’s FR4 (Far-east Europe 4) Asia-North Europe trade lanes, with a port rotation Qingdao-Busan-Ningbo-Shanghai-Yantian / Suez Canal / Rotterdam-Hamburg-Antwerp-London. ALGECIRAS will then sail to Singapore via the Suez Canal.

ALGECIRAS is the first of 12 massive 24,000-TEU vessels scheduled to be delivered to HMM through September. DSME will build seven and SHI five. All are being equipped with scrubbers to meet the International Maritime Organization regulation that requires vessels to burn fuel with less than 0.5% sulfur or have exhaust-cleaning systems.

HMM officially became part of THE Alliance with Hapag-Lloyd, Yang Ming and Ocean Network Express on April 1, after exiting the 2M Alliance with Maersk and MSC in July.2019 {Freightwaves, 23.Apr.2020}.

ALGECIRAS sails under the flag of Panama. It is approximately 1,310 feet in length, with a beam of about 200 feet and depth of more than 108 feet. It is more than 60 feet longer than the Empire State Building is tall. A walk around the world’s largest container ship would be about half a mile.
