PAS: Fewer Trains Emerging From Reopened Hoosac Tunnel

Detour Success, Traffic Slowdown Present Opportunity for PAR to Combine Trains.

10 April, North Adams, MS – As part of the tunnel recovery and repair project, Pan Am Southern has reduced the number of daily trains through the tunnel to allow a full 12-hour unimpeded work window for construction crews. The pair of merchandise trains, symbol EDRJ/RJED, handling CSXT traffic between East Deerfield, MA and Rotterdam Jct., NY, have been combined with the daily train to and from Norfolk Southern, symbols 11R/16R.

The combined 11R/EDRJ runs nightly from East Deerfield to Mechanicville, NY, while eastbound 16R/RJED is the counterpart back to East Deerfield. PAS has employed a RJ-2 symbolled switcher out of Rotterdam Jct., delivering CSXT traffic from Rotterdam to Mechanicville to be combined with the 16R and taking CSXT-bound traffic back to Rotterdam off of the 11R. It is unclear if this will be a permanent change or only through the continued work on the tunnel.
