31 March, Region-wide – With the virtual complete shutdown of North American automobile production, railroads have found themselves with empty autorack trains, the rail cars used to haul autos, and a need to store them.
On 26. March, Canadian Pacific Railway dispatched a train of fifty empty autoracks from Montreal to Colonie, NY for storage until they are again required for loading. Two empty rack trains that departed Davisville, RI and Ayer, MA, the last week of March were sent immediately to Bellevue, OH for storage also.
Late on 31.March, an 89-car empty train that was set to depart from Millers Falls, MA back to Norfolk Southern at Buffalo, NY, was canceled. These and roughly another 100 empty cars on the Pan Am and Providence & Worcester Railroad networks, are all being destined to either Providence or Davisville, RI for storage now. NS and Genesee & Wyoming have reached an agreement for the storage of upward of 200 such cars on the P&W. Additionally, P&W will be storing at least another 100 autoracks for CSXT as well.
